Christine Fischer, Intendantin von Musik der Jahrhunderte

The Artistic Director

Christine Fischer is artistic director of Musik der Jahrhunderte (Stuttgart), manager of the Neue Vocalsolisten, and artistic director of the ECLAT Festival of New Music.

She took over the management of Musik der Jahrhunderte in 1985, while still studying music, and has had a substantial part in the institution's development since then. Some important stages along the way were the fusion with the New Music Days (now ECLAT) in 1989, the establishment of Musik der Jahrhunderte as an institution for New Music, the move to the Theaterhaus am Pragsattel in 2003, with new workplaces and performance venues, and the establishment of the Neue Vocalsolisten as the world's leading specialist ensemble for vocal chamber music. As their manager, she has close contacts with numerous organizers and partner ensembles in Europe and all over the world. The resulting co-operations and co-productions are a vital part of the concert series and the two festivals run by Musik der Jahrhunderte, ECLAT and Sommer in Stuttgart.

In 2006, Christine Fischer was artistic director and head organizer of the ISCM World New Music Festival, which Musik der Jahrhunderte hosted for the International Society for Contemporary Music in Stuttgart.

In 2007, together with musicians and organizers from the Stuttgart region, she founded Netzwerk Süd as part of Netzwerk Neue Musik, a project by the Federal Cultural Foundation, which provided extensive support for outreach projects for New Music. Within Netzwerk Süd, she was responsible for numerous projects in over 30 cities in the Stuttgart metropolitan region, culminating in the festival Zukunftsmusik, under her artistic direction.

In 2012, together with colleagues, Christine Fischer initiated the Netzwerk Neue Musik Baden-Württemberg, which brings members of the regional New Music scene together with important cultural figures and educational institutions. She is the vice-chairwoman of the network.

In 2014 and 2015 she was in charge of the artistic direction of ECLAT Festival together with Björn Gottstein (Editor für Contemporary Music at SWR Stuttgart). From 2016 on she will lead the festival in collaboration with Lydia Jeschke (Chief Editor of Contemporary Music at SWR), who will be responsible for the artistic direction of the SWR ATTACCA in ECLAT concerts within the festival.

In addition to consultancy and lectures in the field of culture management, Christine Fischer's cultural policy activities also include work on various advisory boards and juries, including IMPULS Neue Musik (German-French Foundation for Contemporary Music) and Commissione consultiva des Conservatorio della Svizzera italiana in Lugano.

In July 2011, the French Minister of Culture awarded Christine Fischer the title of "Chevalier dans l‘ordre des Arts et Letters" for her contributions to art and culture in France and Germany.
