Agata Zubel: Abstract Paintings

after paintings by Gerhard Richter

for mixed choir

(2025)

Abstract Paintings is a composition for a 24-voice mixed choir, inspired by the abstract paintings of Gerhard Richter. The piece consists of fourteen parts, each of which interprets a different painting, transferring the palette of painterly textures and colors to a variety of sound textures and tones. Instead of traditional semantics, the piece explores abstract means of vocal expressionit creates abstract soundscapes.

It is not a form of scanning what is visible to the eye, nor an attempt to tell a story about the imageit is rather a musical exploration, a situation in which the musical form is filled with the idea that these specific sounds would not have existed if not for the desire to follow the intensity and dynamics of Gerhard Richter’s painting activities. Thus, the invitation to meet »Abstract Paintings« concerns an encouragement for the listener to immerse themselves in both the sonic and the painting reality.
