Christian Winther Christensen: Children’s Songs

for ensemble and live electronics

Children’s Songs, written for Ensemble Ascolta, revolves around a child’s universe. Kitschy small figures and quotes from the world of children’s music–a world that has taken on a multitude of different forms throughout the history of music–as well as interpretations of the wondrous sounds that arise when children interact with toys, have helped to shape this intense, magical work for seven musicians and a radio.

Children’s Songs was first performed in a shorter version at Donaueschingen in 2022, but has now, with the support of Klang Festival, been further developed into an independent concert work of 45 minutes.

Christian Winther Christensen (*1977) studied composition at Det Kongelige Danske Musikkonservatorium in Copenhagen with Bent Søren- sen, Niels Rosing-Schow, Hans Abrahamsen and Hans-Peter Stubbe Teglbjærg as well as at the Conservatoire de Paris with Frédéric Durieux. He has won the Léonie Sonning Talent Prize, the Schierbeck Prize and a scholarship from the Danish Statens Kunstfond.

‘The Danish composer writes Janus-faced music that looks back and is absolutely present at the same time. Listening becomes a balancing act on a fine line that sometimes tips in one direction, sometimes in the other. Extended preparations, playing and muffling techniques transform the familiar instruments into distorted echoes and knocking signs of a post-apocalyptic music after the end of music and the world. But between the thumping, scratching, stroking, blowing, rattling and hissing, scattered figures, carefully groping rhythms, shadowy harmonies and scraps of melody suddenly emerge. Like the phantom pain of amputated limbs, this makes the loss of earlier practices all the more palpable. But Christensen’s compositions also unfold their own presence in the here and now, without nostalgic reminiscence, absurd alienation or aggressive destruction of familiar music. Beyond historical references, a fascinating world of highly differentiated actions and sounds opens up, inviting us to listen carefully to what really sounds.’
