Arne Gieshoff: notes from sick rooms

Notes from Sick Rooms was written for Sarah Saviet and Joe Houston–two wonderful artists and companions. The title refers to the eponymous text by Julia Stephen, mother of Virginia Woolf–a sober, occasionally humorous guide to nursing in Victorian England. Two quotes from it:

»Among the number of small evils which haunt illness, the greatest, in the misery which it can cause, though the smallest in size, is crumbs. The origin of most things has been decided on, but the origin of crumbs in bed has never excited sufficient attention among the scientific world, though it is a problem which has tormented many a weary sufferer. […] Anyone who has been ill will at once take her precautions, feeble though they will prove. […] When she lies back in bed, in the vain hope that she may have baffled the enemy, he is before her: a sharp crumb is buried in her back, and grains of sand seem sticking to her toes.«

»To those who have watched and suffered with the sufferer there is nothing but rest at first in the knowledge that death has come […]«

Arne Gieshoff (*1988) is a composer of acoustic and electronic music, as well as music-theatrical and participatory works. In addition to pieces for the concert hall, his compositional intuitions have increasingly directed him in recent years »towards the realm of site-specific, music-theatrical, and archival-oriented works.« He has a close collaboration with director Franziska Angerer and dramaturge Carolin Müller-Dohle. In his combination of »found sonic environments/objects,« archival material, and musical transformations, he seeks to uncover, question, and jointly experience layers of time and meaning, much like an archaeologist.

Currently, he is developing a work for the 2025 Darmstadt Summer Courses, to be performed in and with an old Winkel-type air raid bunker, played by five performers and loudspeakers.

Gieshoff is a composition lecturer at the Academy of Music in Darmstadt. He studied at the Royal College of Music (with, among others, J. Cole, K. Hesketh, S. Holt) and was a co-founder of the London-based Explore Ensemble. In 2024/25, he will be a fellow at the International Artists’ House Villa Concordia.
