Maximilian Marcoll: NUT | LAC 4

Installative performance for double bass, bass drum and electronics

(2023/2024)

The NUT | LAC series is the result of a drastic reduction process. Roughly flowing streams of sound are broken up by slowly changing, drilling pulses. The incessant interruption in turn results in the impression of tipping back into a flow.

A continuous drone sooner or later merges with its surroundings, continuous beats lead to social synchronization.

The pulses and pauses in NUT | LAC throw us back on ourselves and bind the underlying drones to the here and now. At the same time, they unsettle our perception of time: the formation of focal points, accelerations and decelerations, shifts and expansions all take place in the material, but also in our heads.

In NUT | LAC 4, the continuous sounds of the double bass and drums remain acoustically open, the transformation here forms a clearly separate counterpart. Insistence & refusal, tilting figure & metamorphosis, repetition & continuum, alarm, attack, trip, celebration.

Maximilian Marcoll (*1981 in Lübeck) studied percussion, instrumental and electronic composition in Lübeck and Essen. In his work, he focuses on the political and media-reflective potential of music and sound.

His last projects before the NUT | LAC series were the »Amproprifications« (transformations of existing works by other composers), a series of monodic canons for digitally controlled sawtooth waves and a composition for big band and small orchestra based on machine learning.

Marcoll has been Professor of Electroacoustic Composition and Sound Art at the University of Music and the Bauhaus University in Weimar since 2021. He lives in Weimar and Berlin.
